Why the Alpha DO2000 Dissolved Oxygen analyzer / controller is an essential device for your aquaculture business
The measurement of dissolved oxygen concentration levels within water where fish are farmed is especially important due to the speed at which levels can change.
Dissolved oxygen concentration is in basic terms, the dissolved oxygen gas in water. Fish are able to absorb the oxygen into their bloodstream and therefore levels need to be maintained to ensure healthy fish stocks.
Where there are low levels of oxygen in the water, fish can become unhealthy and even die. Some species of fish are more likely to be adversely affected by oxygen depletion. However, a general downturn in wellbeing due to depleted oxygen levels is not species specific and will affect all fish.
Oxygen levels often increase when water algae and plants become excessive and help to produce large amounts of oxygen from the water. Chemicals, waste and dead matter can also contribute to changes in dissolved oxygen concentration levels.
Dying plants, hot water temperature and rapid temperature changes can cause dissolved oxygen levels to deplete. With oxygen not being soluble, the water only has a certain amount of potential for holding the oxygen.
There are several tell tale signs that help you to determine if your fish have died from depleted oxygen levels. These include if your large fish have died but small ones are ok, if all fish died at the same time and if fish are observed to be ‘gasping for oxygen at the surface of the water'.
Due to the danger of oxygen depletion and how quickly it can occur, a method for measuring dissolved oxygen concentration is understandably very important. Where measurement of several ponds or units is needed, a dissolved oxygen meter is the most suitable way of taking these measurements.
There are a number of dissolved oxygen meters and analyzers on the market at varying prices and with differing functions. One of the more popular models which is also high performance is the Alpha DO2000 Dissolved Oxygen Analyzer / Controller. The Alpha DO2000 is manufactured by Eutech and is of the highest specification using cutting edge technology.
The AlphaDO2000 can be used for both the measurement of dissolved oxygen and temperature. The controller can be used for treatment of water used in aquaculture applications. The features of the controller are very user friendly with characteristics such as push button calibration and built in memory. Other features include automatic temperature compensation, large dual display LCD, hold functions and protection against electromagnetic interference.
The measuring system on the alphaDO2000 features a chart recorder, an immersion, flow or process assembly, a measurement cable, a pump or valve, a dissolved oxygen process transmitter and a dissolved oxygen sensor with integrated temperature sensor.
The AlphaDO2000 is available in two different versions: the galvanic version or the amperometric version.
The galvanic system offers quick, accurate readings and responds within a very short time period. The amperometric version gives fast results with a nominal required flow rate and a short polarization period.
The measuring range for dissolved oxygen with the galvanic machine is 0.00 – 25.00 mg/l or 0.00 – 300% Saturation. The amperometric machine has a dissolved oxygen measuring range of 0.00 – 20.00 mg/l or 0.00 – 200% Saturation. The temperature measuring range of both units is -10.0 to 125 °C (14.0 to 257.0 °F).
The AlphaDO2000 requires minimum maintenance, can be mounted on a wall or pipe and is password protected ( 3 levels of security).
